  2. Election of 1932 • Hoover’s was unpopular • Franklin D Roosevelt’s promise: • DIRECT assistance for poor (welfare!) • Gov’t would create jobs for ppl • Would fix the stock market & banks

  3. The First Hundred Days • In 3 months FDR passed 15 major acts to fix the depression • Became famous for accomplishing this much in 100 days • Inspired Americans through weekly “fireside chats” on the radio • Each President since has been pressured to achieve something in 100 days

  4. The New Deal • FDR’s plan to fix the country • FDR’s philosophy: • Gov’t money had to be spent to fix the nation’s problems • Gov’t should get involved in business and personal lives of Americans • 3 major goals: The 3 Rs: • Relief • Recovery • Reform

  5. Relief • This meant directly helping Americans who were suffering • Example: CCC • Civilian Conservation Corps created jobs for young men • Men moved to camps where they improved parks • Men were required to send earnings back to families

  6. Recovery • This meant fixing the broken economy • Example: Bank Holiday • FDR closes ALL banks to stop ppl from withdrawing money • Gov’t takes 3 days to decide what each bank needed to survive • FDR gives “fireside chat” asking Americans to trust the banks • Banks reopen; ppl begin depositing money again

  7. Reform • Making changes in the US that would prevent another depression in the future • Example: FDIC • The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation • The gov’t would insure any money you put in the bank • Within 1 month, ppl deposited $1 billion!
