  2. Friday, May 11, 2012 • Understand the effects of the “new look” policy, Massive Retaliation, the U-2 incident and Sputnik on the Cold War.

  3. Eisenhower’s New Look • Eisenhower wanted “more bang for the buck” in the military. He emphasized a smaller Army and a larger Nuclear arsenal.

  5. Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) • Fear of massive retaliation stopped both sides from using their Nuclear weapons.

  6. U-2 incident • The United States sent the U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union. • The Soviets shot down the U-2 and captured pilot Francis Gary Powers.

Cold War: Space Race Quotes • From the Washington Post (Jan. 28th 1958) • The Air Force’s top space expert predicted yesterday the moon will be a military rocket base for either Russia or the US within 10 years. Brig. Gen. Homer A. Boushey, deputy director of Air Force research and Development said the moon will provide a “base of unequaled advantage” for raining “sure and massive destruction” on earth. • The General said “he fully supports the view that ‘He who controls the moon, controls the Earth.’” -Brig.   10. Military Industrial Complex • Eisenhower warned the American people as he left office to be careful of the influence of the defense industry on military spending.

  12. NASA • Congress responded by creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to compete with the Soviet Union.
