Supporting Part Time Faculty with Online Learning Presented by Beverly Hartford, Susan Learney, Michael Crawford Seneca College of Applied Arts & Technology http://fcet/senecac.on.ca/fcet/cade2003
Seneca College of Applied Arts & Technology Faculty of Continuing Education & Training 3 Semesters Annually Each semester the Faculty supports • 1200 online students • 60 online teachers • 110 different subjects
Moving to Online – Why? • Double cohort (grade 12 & 13 being combined in Ontario) • Superbuild – pressure on the physical space, renovations, relocation of programs • Students requesting this mode of delivery • Competition for business, provincially, nationally & internationally
Implementing Online Learning WISH LIST What would your wish list look like? • Students? • Administrators? • Teachers?
Our Wish List • Training & professional development for teachers & staff • Online development -(technical & instructional support) • Each teacher has own email account, 1 Log in – 1 URL to access • Portal access • Learning object repository
The Challenges • A Learning Management Software that would fill our needs • Unprepared faculty lacking skills to teach online • Technical support not 24 hour @ day, 7 days a week • No process in place to get the teachers “online”
Part Time vs. Full Time • Employed in business & industry • Dedicated, but also have other loyalties • Time restrictions, teach three to six hours a week • Specialists in their field, not necessarily technical experts • Traditional professional development sessions scheduled in the day time
The Solutions • Training and professional development opportunities made available to part time teachers • 24 x 7 technical support made available, external service provider hired • Centre for New Technologies In Teaching & Learning – Technical and Instructional Design Support for Faculty
Solutions continued • Streamlined process for teachers to receive email accounts and online access upon issue of employment contract • Learning objects repository (slope) • Portal my.senecacollege.ca
