  2. Think of • incidences where you personally experienced GBV • incidences where you witnessed GBV but remained passive • incidences where you witnessed GBV and reacted • incidences where you had been a perpetrator of GBV

  3. AIM Toempoweryoung people to explore ways to protectthemselves and others from gender-based violence through peer education.

  4. Target Group Students of secondary school: age 15-16 WHY??? • Old enough to have experiences in and out of school (romantic relationships etc). • They can still act as agents of change among peers as they have a few years before graduation.

  5. PHASE I • Training the entire class • Social construction of gender • Relationships between gender • Gender roles • Gender stereotypes • The relationship of the above issues with gender - based violence • TRAINING THE TRAINERS to become peer educators

  6. PHASE II • Peer educators conducted training to peers AIM: • Raise awareness on gender roles • Explore how gender – based violence is manifested in adolescents romantic relationship

  7. THEMES • Gender • Gender roles • Differences between genders • Relationship models • Violence in relationships • Gender – based violence • Taking a stance against gender – based violence • Training peer educators

  8. METHODS USED • Some theoretical background was provided • Interactive methods were used - - - interesting, fun and experiential • Brainstorm • Group discussion • Small groups • Scenarios • Role plays • Taking a stance • Drawing • Audio visuals • Handouts

  9. Ingrid’s dilemma Ingrid and Shane are both 17. They have been going out together for 2 years. One night they are out at a disco and Shane gets drunk. Ingrid decides to go to another disco without Shane and he gets very angry, starts shouting at her and pushes her to the ground. What should Ingrid do? • Stay with Shane for the rest of the night and forget what happened • Leave the disco without Shane and tell her friends what just happened • Start hitting him back until Shane stops shouting • Something else
