ICARUS transfer from LNGS to CERN Jean-Louis GRENARD & Ingo RÜHL (on behalf of Caterina BERTONE) EN-HE
Agenda • Present situation I. Rühl 10 min • Dismantling works JL. Grenard 20 min • Cost estimates I. Rühl 10 min
Present situation • ICARUS experiment and annexed equipment was transferred via TIR tunnel and installed in EMPTY ‘B’ room of LNGS laboratory about 10 years ago. • Since then major modifications in • TIR tunnel • Installation of fire resistant doors, which reduced clearance height from 4.75 to 4.6m • Installation of ventilation ducts, which reduces the overall height clearance along the tunnel to 4.6m • Installation of cryo-box restricting the clearance width to 4.3m in a curve • B room • Installation of WARP experimental complex • Installation of OPERA control rooms • Installation of concrete step of 25cm height in center parallel to TIR gallery • Increase of height floor by 30cm (expect TIR area)
Result of modifications • Free net passage at the door for a long, non tilted item is only about 4.05m Installation procedure ≠ Removal procedure
Objects to be transferred • 2 cryostats containing wire and tube chambers (ext. dimensions 3970x4403mm by 20’209mm of length) with unit weight of 48,5t • Structures and equipment for a total volume of ~1’800mc (26mx11mx10m – 2 tanks) composed of: • 2 STEARLING tanks • 3 pumping groups • 96 electrical cupboards (racks) • Cryogenic material (tanks, pipes, filters etc), metallic structure, bulk material
Dismantling and removal works • Presented by JL. Grenard
Cost estimates • Preparation works (mainly civil engineering works) • Dismantling works (mainly handling works) • Tooling • Transport costs • Summary
Cost estimates – Preparation works • Preparation works • Removing concrete step • Removing OPERA CS2 • Evacuation of all stored equipment • Removal of the ‘neon’ part • Removal of cryo-tank from TIR tunnel • Additional works for complete cryostat evacuation • Removal of added 30cm concrete floor of about 20m length into the cavern • Removal of doors and air duct Costs to be evaluated by INFN!
Dismantling works • Based on CERN experience the dismantling work of items that shall be transferred to CERN will require • 1 crane drivers • 2 handlers • 1 mechanic • 1 foreman / supervisor • for a period of up to 2 months. • These people must have many years of experience to work in confined underground areas. • CERN supervision of dismantling and handling activities is subject to approval by the CERN management. 15’000 SFr/2 months 30’000 SFr/2 months 15’000 SFr/2 months 20’000 SFr/2 months 80’000 SFr Cost estimates based on CERN contract prices with the French company AltéAD- displacement costs to be added!
Tooling • Mobile crane and forklift rental 10-20 kSFr • In case that cryostat will be removed • Consumables (slings, hooks, etc.) 10-20 kSFr • Air pads 15 kSFr • Compressor unit 10 kSFr • Repair, modify, certify transport tools 15kSfr • Contingencies (storage costs, etc.) 20 kSFr Costs estimate varies between 60 and 100kSFr
Transport costs • Two exceptional transport convoys from LNGS to CERN 120 kSFr • Standard cargo truck 2 kSFR • Estimated 20 travels 40 kSFr Cost estimates provided by French company AltéAD!
