The Osher Initiative, the Foundation, and Your CollegeWorking Together to Achieve Common Goals Presented by Dr. Paul Lanning and Kerry Wood, CFRE
The Osher Initiative • Creation of the CA Community Colleges Scholarship Endowment
Presentation Purpose • Provide an overview of the Osher Initiative • Discuss how the FCCC can help • Clarify previously asked questions • Offer an open forum for additional questions
Specifics • Elements of the CCCSE • Criteria • Scholarship amount • Use of funds • Donor’s additional criteria • Geography (region or a specific college) • Area of study
Donation “Life Cycle” Donation to College Donation Deposited into College/ Foundation Account Funds Transferred to CCCSE via FCCC College Distributes Scholarship(s) Earnings Returned to College/ Foundation Funds Matched and Held in CCCSE Fund for College
Investment and Accounting • Investment Committee • Investment Policy • Management Firm • Reports for Colleges • Five Percent Return Guarantee • Administrative Fees
Specific Questions • What happens to the endowment if the FCCC ceases to exist? • How is the allocation adjusted based on annual changes in CCs added or removed from the system? • What if a college chooses not to participate? • What if we raise more than our allocated goal for the match? Do we still get the match, and if not, why would we invest any excess amount in this fund?
Specific Questions (continued) • What if we have an emergency and need these funds? Do the funds have to stay in the CCCSE fund forever? • Who set the fundraising goals for us? • How can we raise funds for this if we don’t have the capacity or have too many other fundraising demands with too few staff?
Toolkit • Forms • Letters • Key messages/case for support • Media plan and resources • Website: foundationccc.org
Key Messages • Your gift is matched 50 cents on the dollar – for example, a gift of $100,000 becomes $150,000 and results in a minimum of 7 scholarships for students in need, in perpetuity. • Be part of history by providing scholarships to CCC students in greatest financial need, initiated by the largest gift ever made to the community college system.
Key Messages (continued) • An investment in CA’s CCs will promote academic achievement, make college possible for students throughout the state, and ultimately lead to a stronger workforce that meets the demands of the new world economy. • 100% percent of your donation goes directly to fund scholarships – no administrative fees are charged (this is based on FCCC’s practices and not reflective of what a CCC may charge) • Contributing to the overall goal of creating a $100M permanent endowment provides scholarships for a minimum of 5,000 CCC students each year, forever.
