  1. Age of Empire – Eric J. Hobsbawm.

  2. 1. What does Hobsbawm mean by “search for markets”? What are some examples? • Hobsbawm is referring to the exploitation of land that was unclaimed by any other European power anywhere on the globe. This was an effort to find more people to buy products and extract primary resources. Examples of this are found in China and the Belgian Congo.

  3. 2. What did European powers hope these colonies would do for them? • They hoped that these colonial populations would provide an outlet for excess production and provide a resolution to the Great Depression that followed the Napoleonic Wars.

  4. 3. Do commerce and morality co-exist? • That’s a good question. Ask Lenin, Marx, or Adam Smith.

  5. 4. What does Hobsbawm believe caused this quest for empire? • Hobsbawm believes that the Scramble for colonies was a natural byproduct of the international economy. Industrial economies were competing not just for resources, but also for markets to sell their products into for a profit.

  6. 5. What is the relationship between economics and politics in the colonial era? • During this period, the economic and political motives for colonization became difficult to separate as countries sought not only to acquire and secure exclusive markets for their industries, but also prevent their competitors from acquiring markets of their own. The status as a Great power in the world became synonymous with controlling colonies.

  7. 6. Does this kind of activity still go on? • See… • NAFTA • GATT • WTO • World bank • IMF
