New nations in Europe • The Austrio-Hungarian empire disappeared at the end of the war. • Many nations were created from the disappearance of Austria-Hungary: Finland, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Lithuania, Czechoslovakia, Austria, and Hungary. • Both Russia and Germany lost territory after the war.
Russian Revolution • There were not enough factories to produce to war material (weapons, ammunition, tanks, etc) • Not enough railroads to carry supplies to the front where the troops were fighting. • 8 million soldiers killed or wounded • Lack of food and fuel for civilians • Soviets are committees formed from workers, soldiers, and peasants.
A troubled Germany • Inflation is the loss of value of money, coupled with businesses raising prices. • Depression is a period of low economic activity when people lose their jobs • Frightened American investors withdrew money from banks, and banks collapsed • 2 out of 5 ( 40%) unemployment rate.
