325T GrantU.S. Department of EducationOffice of Special Education Programs • GOAL 1:To IMPROVE SUNY Fredonia’s teacher preparation program by graduating highly qualified special education teachers. Grant Criteria: • Must have an established special education teacher preparation program when applying for grant • One-time five year grant requiring a cooperative agreement with OSEP NYS Higher Education Task Force March 26, 2010
Setting the Context • Our Childhood Inclusive Education Program is a merged teacher preparation program. • College of Education includes two departments: ~ Curriculum & Instruction ~ Language, Learning & Leadership • 7 special education faculty (including Dean Givner) • Rural university setting in Western New York NYS Higher Education Task Force March 26, 2010
Purpose of Grant • Revise general education teacher preparation curriculum by embedding special education content and knowledge supported by evidence-based practices into course syllabi throughout the curriculum • Enhance the collaboration skills of our program graduates to work with parents of students with disabilities and other educational professionals NYS Higher Education Task Force March 26, 2010

Developing a Process • Five-year funded grant - $500,000 (funded July, 2009) • Fall 2009 was our planning semester • Drs. Magiera and Simmons received a course release • Grant Planning Group: Dr. Christine Givner, Dr. Larry Maheady, Dr. Barbara Mallette, Dr. Laura Geraci • Met twice a month during Fall 2009 • Focused on Inclusion, Evidence-Based Practices, and Partnerships (IEP for the LRE) NYS Higher Education Task Force March 26, 2010
Developing a Process (cont’d) • Used Dr. Dan Reschly’s work on “Innovation Configurations” (IC’s) to develop tools to analyze our syllabi (all syllabi were submitted with grant application) • OSEP will analyze re-submitted syllabi in April 2011 • SUNY Fredonia Student CEC Chapter approved October, 2009 • Hired Project Administrative Coordinator to reach out to rural school districts NYS Higher Education Task Force March 26, 2010
Winter Institute January 20 & 21, 2010 • Two-day professional development for all faculty • Day 1: Outside evaluator, Dr. Spencer Salend from SUNY New Paltz joined 20 faculty members to discuss Childhood Inclusive Education Program • Day 2: IRIS training and use in University classroom NYS Higher Education Task Force March 26, 2010
Future Project Activities • Pilot Innovation Configuration s (IC’s) with selected syllabi - Spring 2010 • Revise IC’s - Summer 2010 • Analysis of all syllabi - Fall 2010 • Resubmit syllabi to OSEP - April 2011 NYS Higher Education Task Force March 26, 2010
