Meeting the Fox Patch and Scruffbag were munching peacefully on the grass, when they noticed a red fox coming towards them. Before they knew it, the fox had pounced on Patch. Ginger the fox snarled, ‘I’ll eat you up. BOTH OF YOU!’ ‘Oh, don’t eat me,’ said Scruffbag. ‘Patch will taste much nicer. And besides all I eat is grass. Patch eats other things. She’s weird!’ ‘Oi! Don’t listen to her,’ said Patch. ‘Just because she’s older and I’m younger!’ ‘You two stop quarrelling!’ interrupted Ginger the fox.
Persuading the Fox The fox said, ‘Do you want me to eat the grass or what?’ ‘Of course we do,’ they chorused. ‘Well,’ replied Ginger, ‘I think you should try it first just to test it’s not poisonous.’ Patch said to Scruffbag, ‘Go on, then you try!’ Scruffbag replied, ‘No, you try! I’m full!’ Patch said, ‘OK..’ And ate away. The fox stared at the grass. It didn’t look very appetising. But he tried it. And it was quite tasty he thought. So he tried more and more. Then he said, ‘Todoloodledo, see you tomorrow.’
The fox and his family The fox arrived the next day with a vixen and two cubs. They were hungry but they weren’t interested in grass. Neither was their mother. What she really wanted was a juicy fat guinea pig! Then the fox, Ginger, came along and said, ‘My darling Vicky, why don’t you try some grass? It’s so much easier to catch! You don’t have to chase it. Or kill it!’ ‘OK,’ said Vicky, ‘But if it upsets the milk and the cubs, you’re in for it!’ ‘Oi, help,’ butted in Scruffbag. ‘Haven’t you seen your cubs. They’re attacking us!’ ‘Don’t worry, dearies,’ said Vicky. ‘I’ve got plenty enough milk for them. Besides they’re too young for meat!’
Happy Ever After A man came out with a guinea pig on his shoulder. It turned out Scruffbag had a husband and Patch was her son. The man said, ‘Oh no, my pets are going to be eaten!’ Then he saw the foxes were eating grass. Then he exclaimed, ‘Phew! They’re vegetarian! How weird! As they’re vegetarian, they can come and live with me in my house. ‘ And they all lived happily ever after!
