Let me Introduce myself! My name IS … MRs.PipeR • I teach 6th grade Language arts on the braves team and also team leader. • Your child is in a language arts block consisting of English, Reading, and writing. • This will be my 16thyear at bms! • I love my JOB and school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This year in language arts we will strive to… • foster an appreciation of the language arts in all students through guided practice, independent inquiry, and whole-group instruction. • read, discuss, and evaluate a variety of literature including short stories, novels, nonfiction, poetry, and plays. • learn strategies for improving their reading fluency and comprehension. • use writing to express thoughts and respond to literature. • enhance writing by improving vocabulary, spelling, & grammar while practicing a variety of writing strategies and styles.
There are some supplies that you will need just for this class…. • 1 ½” binder (any color) • Plenty of loose-leaf paper • Composition book (for journal entries) • Plenty of pencils (Please!) • Ink pens…(any color but florescent) • Highlighter s (at least one yellow) • 1 plasticfolder (hole-punched)
We will be organizing your binder with the following items… • loose leaf paper • plastic folder • composition book • Grammar, Mechanics, and Usage Workbook • Handouts
You may be wondering what you will be graded on… READING • Class Participation • Interactive Reader • Open Responses • Comprehension Quizzes • Quarter reading requirements • Unit Tests • Book Projects • Class novels I will update my grades in Infinite Campus every Wednesday. Please check with the Guidance Office for user name and password. english • Completion of Daily Work • Word Study Units • Quizzes • Unit Tests • Writing Assignments • Journal topics • Projects
Independent reading requirements • Students will be required to read 10 books from a variety of genres each grading period. • Books should be at a 4.0 RL or higher, but may be of any length. Books with 350 pages or more will count twice. • Students must have something to read EVERY DAY! • We will start class with approximately 10 minutes of personal choice reading time. • Students may borrow from the classroom library, and we will go to the BMS Media Center every Tuesday. • I will monitor reading through journal entries, student conferences, and exit slips.
Will there be homework? • By using time in class wisely, students will generally complete much of their classroom work at school…but YES, there will be homework! • Students are expected to copy the day’s work in their agenda books EVERY DAY! Due date are always noted on the agenda chart. • All work and handouts should be housed and organized in the language arts binder.
Grading scale… A 94-100 B 85-93 C 73-84 D 65-72 F 64 OR BELOW
Grading Homework: one daily grade Quizzes: one grade Tests: Double grade Projects: double grade A study guide will be sent home prior to any test given. A student may earn 5 bonus points by returning the study guide signed!!!!! A parent signature should indicate that the parent knows their child has spent a reasonable amount of time studying for the test. Extra credit will be given periodically every nine weeks. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS TAKE ADVAntage of this opportunity!!!
Make-up policy… • Homework is expected to be turned in ON TIME unless the student has an excused absence on the day it is due. • Any work assigned before an absence is expected the next day the student comes back to school. • Upon return to school, it is the student’s responsibility to retrieve missed assignments in the labeled trays in the back of the room . • Tests or quizzes should be made up before school (If Possible ) . • Students have one week to make up missed work. If an assignment is not completed, the bms Homework policy guidelines will be implemented.
Classroom rules… • Arrive to class on time and be in your seat when the bell rings prepared to learn. • Come to class everyday with all materials. • Respect others; respect your school; respect yourself. • Listen carefully and Follow directions. • Always strive to do your personal best.
Warning!!! There are consequences!! You are responsible for your own actions! BMS uses a Pyramid of Discipline which all teachers follow. • Verbal Warning • Note of Concern To Parent • Guidance Referral • Area Detention (Tuesdays 3:30-4:30) • Office Referral (Discipline Ticket) *Students causing major disturbances will be sent to the time-out room.
