  1. What is expressive writing? • Writing that is author-centered; • The most important consideration is the writer’s intent to tell a story or make meaning of an experience (reflection, self discovery) • To achieve personal goals • To create literary pieces

  2. What is FATP? • It is a technique for a writer to focus his/her ideas on a writing prompt so they can develop a relevant thesis statement and quality essay.

  3. Form • The Form of a prompt can vary depending on what task is asked of the writer. • Some examples of different forms are: • Diary entry • Speech • Letter • Essay • Can you think of any more? ** When you are given a prompt, and a form is not given, automatically assume it is an ESSAY!

  4. Audience • A prompts’ audience can determine what type of voice you will use in your writing. • Some audience examples: • A stranger • A friend • A teacher • A principal • If the audience is not told to you in the prompt, automatically assume you are writing to the teacher • THIS DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN WRITE A LETTER!!!

  5. Topic • Simply put, “What are you going to write about?” • This part of the FATP process should be where you develop the ideas for your thesis statement. • It should also drive your pre-writing/webbing and eventually drafting.

  6. Purpose • Again simply put, “What is the reason I am writing?” • The topic should drive the purpose • There are 3 main purposes: • Persuade – state an opinion and defend it • Inform – to write to share information • Express – share feelings about a topic • Ex. Hero, Special Item, & Favorite Class Prompts

  7. Think of one thing about the world that you would like to change. What is it? How would changing the world make a difference to you or to others? Write an essay convincing someone that you’re right. F- ESSAY A- STRANGER T- HOW WOULD I CHANGE THE WORLD AND WHAT DIFFERENCE WOULD IT MAKE? P- PERSUADING

  8. Everyone has a favorite teacher. Who is yours? Why was he or she so special? Describe your favorite teacher and discuss why this is someone you’ll always remember. F- Essay A- Teacher T- Who is my favorite teacher and why P- Express

  9. Your school district is having a severe budget shortfall. Things are really bad. They have only two choices. They can cut the football, baseball, and basketball programs at all the schools, or they can fire 100 teachers. Write a speech that you will give to your principal convincing him to see your point of view. F- Speech A- Principal T- Should the district cut sports or 100 teaching positions? P- Persuading

  10. FAT-P “Heroes are a valuable part of our world and everyone’s daily life. Using the hero in your life, identify qualities or traits heroes possess. Provide examples of these qualities.” Explain why these qualities are important. F- Essay A- Stranger T- Qualities of Heroes P- Express

  11. Many of us have a special place where we like to go. It may be an exotic vacation spot or it could just be somewhere in your house or community. What’s your favorite place? Why is it so important to you? • F- Essay • A- Teacher • T- What is your favorite place and why? • P- Express

  12. Some valuable things can be bought in a store, other valuable things cannot be bought no matter how much money you have. Think about what is most valuable to you. Explain to your friend what is most valuable to you and why. F- Essay A- Friend T- What my most valuable item is and why it is so valuable P- Express

  13. Holidays/ special occasions are usually a fun time for everyone. Sometimes we just take the day off. Other times we get together with our families. What’s your favorite holiday or special occasion? Why is it your favorite? F- Essay A- Teacher T- What is your favorite holiday/special occasion and why? P- Express

  14. Brainstorming • Listing ideas to help develop your topic. Example: What is your favorite class and why? Language Arts Math P.E. Spanish Science

  15. What is webbing? • It starts off the writing process in a great way • Webbing helps us organize our ideas, by filling out a graphic organizer • Webbing gives us structure to our writing • By organizing our ideas, we will be able to write WONDERFUL pieces!
