  1. What are the major religious beliefs of Islam? Why did certain religious groups feel that revolution against the Shah was necessary and how does this belief impact the citizens of Iran, the US and/or the rest of the world? Salihah Siddiqui Mrs. Kramer- 3rd period Iran Project

Religious beliefs of Islam • Monotheistic: believe in one god, Allah • Five pillars of Islam: Believing in one God and Muhammad is his last prophet, praying, fasting, helping the poor, and performing a pilgrimage to Makkah. • Allah sends prophets and messengers to his people to spread religion and they include Jesus (Isa) and the main Messenger was Muhammad. • Quran is the holy book, explains the way of life. • Pray 5 times a day • Following the way Muhammad lived is another goal in life

Why the revolution? • the Shah was unpopular with the public • He was a dictator who was put into power by Westerners • He wanted to “westernize” Iran. • The Shah used the SAVAK, which was the secret police, to rule the country • His ideas clashed with the Islamists: tobacco, alcohol, movies, gambling and clothing style • The Shah was enforcing ideas on people that they did not want to follow

Impacts of this belief on people • The outcome of the Iranian Revolution was a positive one for Iran. • oppression ended and their ideologies, religious, and cultural traditions were well-maintained. • resulted in peace in Iran and a better government. • The revolution transformed Iran from a monarchy to an Islamic Republic • Iran’s relation with US worse • People understood that they could fight for what the believed.
