Why is work and employment important to raising the participation age of young people with disabilities? • Young people with a learning disabilities leaving education face very limited options ~ less than 1/20 leave school and enter paid employment. • Evidence and expert opinion demonstrates that people with learning disabilities learn best in the workplace using a place, train & sustain model. • Supported Internships are increasingly being recognised as best practice by Government. • Colleges are under growing pressure to deliver employment outcomes • LA challenged with ever-decreasing budgets • Changing funding environment

Myths and Facts Can only work 2 hours • Employment rates for disabled people are well below those for non-disabled people • Overall employment rate is 71% • Employment rate of people with a disability is 48% • Employment rate of people with LDD* is 6.4% • When asked, 65% of people with LDD want to work Can’t work Can only do entry level jobs! Will make a lot of mistakes Will make a lot of mistakes

London Programmes – GLA Offer • Greater London Authority/ESF funded Youth Programme 2011-13 • Three themes: • Engagement for Young people Excluded from School • Resettlement of Young Offenders Leaving Custody • Young People with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities (LDD) • Three contract areas: • Central and South (LDD1) • Pathways to a Positive Future • Remploy Limited • North and East (LDD2) • Worksmart • Leonard Cheshire Disability • West and South West (LDD3) • Pathways to a Positive Future • Remploy Limited

Pathways to a Positive Future (LDD1 & 3) • Unique programme offering real employment opportunities • Based on existing good practice • A strong proposition for employers through well supported “extended working interviews” (internships) with employers expected to commit to real jobs at the end of them • Young people personalised support to enable them to succeed in their chosen career or education • Low caseloads, high quality personalised support to young person and employer • Each Local Authority has access to approximately 20 places • Client Group: Young people 16-25 years, with a LDD* • Target: 70% of young people to sustain employment for 52 weeks * With evidence of a SEN

Other Programmes – Steps into Work • Steps into Work is a ‘place, train and sustain’ supported internship model developed by Remploy from our experience of delivering Project Search. • Piloted for the last 3 years in partnership with Transport for London and Barnet College in London. • Funded by a mixture of education and ALS monies accessed by partner college. • 9 month programme, student’s day is split between working with a college tutor to achieve formal qualification and job placements supported by a Remploy Job Coach.   • Over the 3 years we have enrolled 31 young people, 29 have graduated with 50% of the programme graduates moving into paid employment.

Other Programmes – SEN School Employability Pilot • Pilot to support 600 SEN students aged 14 - 19 and parents through collaboration between Remploy, Manchester and Leicester City Councils, Leicestershire County Council and 14 Schools. • Delivery of employability support, careers advice, supported work tasters and placements and progression support. Support for parents. • 75% of approx 200 ‘leavers’ progress to Further Education, Apprenticeships or employment and supported in sustaining. • £1,357,201 grant funding from DfE, 01/04/2013 – 31/03/2015. Cambridgeshire County Council ‘Raising the Participation Age’ programme: 40 students from 2 SEN Schools running until March 2014.

Some other Products and Services • Supported Employment • A specialist service to support individuals with learning disabilities to move into, or stay in work, including vocational profiling, job finding and training • Additional Learning Support • A targeted employment support service for people with learning disabilities, including help with achieving their Individual Learner Recprd objectives • iRemploy • A bespoke online employability service for disabled people; helping to develop soft and vocational skills, while expending social and personal skills in an independent learning environment • Ability Profiler • An online profiling tool which maps an individual’s strengths, support and development needs, including the impact of disabilities and/or health conditions, to create a development plan to aid moving into employment www.remploy.co.uk
