Endocrine System • Second great control system of the body • Interacts with the nervous system to coordinate and integrate the activity of body cells • Influences metabolic activity by means of hormones • Hormones = chemical messengers released into the blood to be transported throughout the body; regulate the metabolic function of other cells in the body

  3. Hormones • The major body processes that are controlled by hormones are: • Reproduction • Growth and development • Mobilization of body defenses • Maintenance of electrolyte, water, and nutrient balance of the blood • Regulation of cellular metabolism and energy balance

Organs • Organs of the endocrine system are scattered throughout the body • Include • Pituitary gland • Thyroid gland • Parathyroid gland • Adrenal gland • Pineal gland • Thymus gland • Hypothalamus • Pancreas • Ovaries/Testes • Other hormone producing organs • Heart • GI tract • Placenta • Kidneys • Skin • Adipose Tissue
