  3. Significance of pieta • Connects idea of pain with idea of redemption • Christ completely resembles the dead • Humans are faced with pain and redemption • Figures in sculpture are of beauty and are divine

Connection between book and sculpture • Asher expresses his conflicts and pain through his art. • Expresses his mother’s pain through the Christian symbols. i.e. crucifixion and pieta. • Mother’s pain was dealing with aryeh and Asher. Sculpture helps him reflect and to become an individual more aware of his implication of his actions.

  5. Why Potok chose Pieta • Sculpture is significant in bringing back memories of pain, in this case Asher's pain. • Helps Asher reflect on his life.
