  2. Example 1 • A man is trying to cross a river that flows due W with a strong current. If the man starts on the N bank, how should he head in order to reach the bank directly across from him?

  3. Example 2 • A boat’s speed relative to the water is 1.85 m/s. If the boat is to travel directly across a river whose current is 1.20 m/s, at what angle upstream should it head?

  4. Example 3 • The same boat now heads directly across the stream a) what is its velocity relative to the shore? B) if the river is 110 m wide, how long will it take to cross? C) How far downstream will it go?

  5. Example 4 • A plane whose airspeed is 200 km/hr heads due North but a 100 km/hr wind coming 45°N of E begins to blow. What is the resulting velocity of the plane? What heading should be set in order to stay on course? Will it gain or lose speed?
