Genetic Engineering • Bacterial cells are much smaller than animal cells. • They have no nucleus • Their genetic information is in the form of one circular chromosome. • They also have smaller plasmids which carry genes.
Genetic Engineering • The development of Genetic engineering makes it possible to put genes from one organism into a different organism. • A good example is putting human genes into bacteria. The bacteria then have the instructions to make whatever the gene is supposed to code for.
Genetic Engineering • Genetic engineering has been carried out with the gene for insulin production. • Insulin is a protein which we produce to control our blood sugar concentration. • Some people can’t make insulin so can’t control their blood sugar concentration and therefore suffer from diabetes.
Genetic Engineering • The insulin needed for diabetics can now be made by bacterial cells. • This is done by inserting the human insulingene into bacteria and they can then produce large quantities of insulin for us very quickly.
