Diploma Core Requirements • Extended Essay • Must be submitted to receive diploma • Maximum 4,000-word essay • Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) • Performed over 1.5 years • 1/3 of your effort to each. • Theory of Knowledge (ToK) • Interdisciplinary course centres on the question "How do I know? “ • Includes 1200-1600 word essay.
IB DP @ TMS – Group Subjects • All subjects take two years to complete • Most courses have a standardized final exam in May of the student’s grade 12 year (2013 for this year’s MYP Year 5 students) • All assessments are marked on a 1-7 scale • Courses are classified as either Higher Level or Standard Level.

What does the HL Designation mean? • HL subjects allow students to study in greater breadth and depth than SL courses and require more time • Students are encouraged to choose HL subjects that they enjoy and find interesting • HL subjects may allow students to earn first year university credits.
What are the DP courses @ TMS? • Group 1 – English literature & English language and literature, both HL and SL • Group 2 – French and Spanish (ab initio) (both SL) • Group 3 – Economics & History, both HL and SL • Group 4 – Biology, Chemistry & Physics, all HL and SL • Group 5 – Mathematics Standard & Mathematics Studies (both SL) • Group 6 – Visual Arts HL and SL
Which subjects are compulsory? • Group 1 – English – Language and Literature or Literature • Group 5 – Mathematics or Math Studies • Theory of Knowledge • Writer’s Craft
Which groups provide subject choice? • Group 2 – French or Spanish • Group 3 – Economics or History • Group 4 – Biology, Chemistry or Physics
What about Group 6? For a sixth Diploma course, students may choose • Visual Arts; OR • An additional course from either Group 3 or Group 4 (i.e. Economics, History, Biology, Chemistry or Physics)
External Assessment • Up to 80% of a student’s final mark in IB at TMS is comprised of external assessment employing a variety of methods: • essays • structured problems • short response questions • multiple-choice questions (Group 4 Experimental Sciences only). • portfolio • Visual Arts visiting examiner • The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are also externally assessed
Internal Assessment • Between 20% and 30% of a student’s mark comes from internal assessment by the student’s teachers in the form of: • oral commentaries in languages • portfolios in economics • historical investigations • laboratory work in the sciences • investigations in mathematics • In Visual Arts HL, 40% of the student’s mark comes from an investigation workbook
How do students earn the Diploma? • The highest mark a student may achieve is 45 out of 45 • Diploma candidates must receive a minimum of 24 points over their six subjects • Students complete CAS requirements with the support of a CAS supervisor • Students must also complete the Extended Essay and ToK
How does TMS help? • Keeping students on track: students receive interim grades throughout the two-year program to ensure they maintain grades above the minimum required to get the Diploma • Internal Deadlines: Teachers set early deadlines for students to ensure that they hand in quality work rather than rushed work • Spreading the work load: Dates for assignments will be spread through the two years.
How does TMS help? • External Assessment Preparation: Teachers will assess students using past examination questions to ensure that students understand the form of the examination while learning the content. • Students have a supervisor to help them with their extended essay and; • Students take “Writer’s Craft” to help them learn research methods for their extended essay • Internal Assessment Preparation: Teachers choose assignments for the student’s portfolio that reflect the best a student has achieved over the two year subject
