Quick Facts • Viruses are not living things • Viruses don’t have their own kingdom • Viruses kill their host cells • There are over 800 viruses known to man • Virus’ are named by the disease they cause • Many famous viruses are HIV, Influenza, and E. coli T4 Virus
Replication • The Virus needs a host cell to replicate and exist • There are two different cycles, the Lytic Cell and Lysogenic Cell • The five steps are absorption, entry, replication, assembly, and release Steps of Replication
Structure • Has an inner core of nucleic acid containing an DNA or RNA (their genetic material) • Has an outer coat of protein called a capsid • Some viruses have an additional layer surrounding the capsids called an envelope • The arrangement of the proteins in the capsids determines the virus’ shape
