  1. Friday- Scavenger Hunt/Review You (and your partner) can answer these on regular paper OR create a word document and email it to me! If you choose regular paper keep it until Monday so you can study. If you choose to create a word document, email it to yourself also! This is not anything formal, just your notes or a study sheet you create from this activity. I need to see that you have reflected on the material. *The first two activities are new material….. The rest are review of material we have already covered. The expectation is that you stay on task in order to have enough time to get through the activity! Good Luck!

  2. Disease Click the link: Go to the tab across the top that says Guinea Worm. Click the link in the gray area that says: Guinea Worm Facts. Scan through the guiding questions, paying close attention to what causes Guinea Worm, treatment, cure or prevention and the effects of Guinea Worm on a community. Watch the short video on the right side of the page. You may choose to watch the longer version it gives you about Sudan, but I am warning you that it is kind of gross and you might be disturbed. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WATCH THE LONGER VIDEO. Go to the tab that says Lymphatic Filariasis. Watch the video to the right. *If you can’t watch the videos, just read the information provided. What causes this disease? How is it cured or prevented?

What was Jared Diamond’s theory of the reason for the prevalence of disease in Africa? *The Shape of Africa Article we read in class.

REGIONS AND EARLY HISTORY Use information from the following link: Early History Create a chart that gives an example of one economic, social, political and physical characteristic of Ghana, Mali and Songhay. Go to the very bottom of the page to find information about Great Zimbabwe. What does the word Zimbabwe mean? How does this civilization indicate why so many people are not aware of early African history? *Obviously the Egyptian civilization is very important, you will study this more in World History next year. Example chart:

  5. For your test Monday, be able to: • Describe and explain the climate pattern and type of Africa……….. For example: • What does the pattern look like? • What is Africa missing that creates this pattern? • How does the placement of Africa on the globe affect its climate? • How has climate affected its ability to develop according to Mr. Diamond’s theory? • Be able to explain why South Africa grows wheat and other crops from Europe.

Kilimanjaro is a….it and the Great Rift Valley are caused by….. -Why is Lake Victoria so shallow??????? (Bonus question!)

When was Africa colonized? What do you think is the connection of the timing of the two colonial periods? How have the boundaries affected the pattern of development on the continent? (HDI map you created, plus what you know about the Berlin Conference.)
