My service learning I completed my service learning at the East Branch Library in Arlington on Thursdays from 4-5:30 pm
First session • I was really excited to start tutoring at the learning zone. I really did not have any experience working with kids and it really gave me the opportunity to gain some valuable experience. • The first student I worked with was Abraham and I was able to help him with his homework and at the same time I started to get a little comfortable as we read a book and work on reading worksheets.
Second session • On the second tutoring session I worked with Abraham again. this time we worked on math homework that consisted of counting money. • I was glad that I was able to help Abraham with different subjects. • He also really enjoyed game time.
Third Session • On this session I worked with a different student his name is Amir. I was having a hard time getting Amir to focused because he seemed more worried about playing time then his homework. • I was able to get Amir to focus by telling and we were able to finish with his homework • This session allowed me to work with a different student. • The more students I get to work with the better. I was able to get him to focused on his work.
Fourth Session • On this session I worked with another student his name is Yasir. He is a fourth grader in Arlington. We worked with on fractions • Working with a fourth grader gave me opportunity to work with a student of a different grade that I was accustomed to.
Fifth Session • At this point of service learning I feel very comfortable attending the learning zone. I look forward to helping the students there. • On this session I was able to talk to one of the parents of the student I was tutoring. We talked about ways that I could help her son for the TAKS test. • Listening to parents concerns about students it’s a big part of teaching and this session allowed me to do just that.
Sixth Session • This was the week after spring break. • I had a chance to work with the same student for the third straight week. We ran into some difficulties because the learning zone does not have materials for fourth graders. • We were able to check out a book and work on TAKS material • I was frustrated because Yasir did not bring his back pack and said that he did not have any homework, but I was able to find work
Seventh Session • This week I worked with Amir again. the first time I worked with Amir I had a hard time getting Amir to focused but this time it was different. • I was able to use some of the behavior strategies that I’ve been learning in school. • I modeled some subtraction problems and Amir was able to finish his subtraction homework with little assistance • I was happy that I tough him subtraction effectively
Eight Session • Once again I worked with Yasir this time we worked on vocabulary worksheets.
Ninth Session • On this session Yasir and his mom were arguing because Yasir did not want to work on TAKS materials. I talked to Yasir and I explained to him that his mom only wants the best for him. • He agree to work on TAKS materials and learn a new strategy on fractions. • This would be the last time I work with Yasir.
Tenth and last Session • I worked with Amir for one last time. He was not focused on his work but we were able to finish with his homework. • I’m a little upset that service learning is coming to an end but it was a overall good experience.
