EPSY 430 Tests and Measurements (Elementary)
Assessment • A general term • Includes all the information teachers gather in the classroom • A process of collecting, synthesizing, and interpreting information to aid in decision making
Test • One strategy for assessment • A formal, systematic procedure for gathering information • Planned measurements by which teachers attempt to create opportunities for students to display their achievement relative to specified goals (Cangelosi, 1990)
Measurement • The process of quantifying or assigning a number to performance • The process by which facts or data are gathered through empirical observation (Cangelosi, 1990)
Evaluation • Using assessment information to make decisions or judgements about pupils, instruction, or classroom climate • categorized as either formative or summative
Formative Evaluations • Judgements about student achievement that influence a teacher’s lesson plans • continuous evaluations that guide what the teacher should do next • Should a lesson be extended or terminated? • Is remediation or more advanced work appropriate? • Is the pace of instruction to fast or too slow? • Should teaching strategies be altered?
Summative Evaluations • Judgements that teachers use to report periodically on how well students have achieved
