OAFLA From an idea to an institution. What was the idea of the transformation of OAFLA? The idea was the challenge of defying the outdated stereotype of First Ladies everywhere.

What was the idea of the transformation of OAFLA? The idea was the challenge of defying the outdated stereotype of First Ladies everywhere. To break the tradition of assigning symbol and ceremony to the spouse of an African Head of State who are, for the most part, professional women in their own right. Make African First Ladies a powerful force of change and use their good offices to bring about change in the lives of millions of their people in their individual countries in particular and the African continent in particular.
Build on their dedication and utilize the influences of their high office to fight poverty and gender inequality by establishing schools, clinics and other social welfare programs to help Africa’s vulnerable. On the national and continental level, conduct advocacy work to bring about policies that address the problems of women and children. Utilize the power of their collective efforts, so that they could have an even greater continent-wide impact and to be the voice of Africa’s vulnerable to the broader global community.
