  2. 567 young people came to the Open Door Project seeking advice and asking for help with their housing situation between April 2006 and March 2007….. ….Between Apr 07 and Mar 08 the numbers of young people were less because the Officers were working hard to help young people stay at home or find alternative lodgings rather than them becoming homeless…

  3. Open Door Project & YMCA Step In project • Help young people to stay at home where they can • They do this by providing mediation, a Community Host Scheme (where a young person is unable to live at home) and intensive support services

  4. Estimated 8,791 16/17 yr olds living in Wakefield • Over the last 2 years the young people that the Officers at Open Door Project worked with have mainly been single young people • There has been contact from more females than males in both 06/07 and 07/08 • In 06/07 90% of homeless prevention cases were resolved without a homeless application being made in 07/08 it was 88%

  9. When you are homeless people look at you differently, like you’re just dirt. It’s a horrible feeling. Some older people feel sorry for you but young people call you names like “tramp”. One night I was asleep and woke up to find a load of drunks weeing on me. Now I’ve got my own place and I look a bit tidier I feel like I get a better reaction from people. Leon (33) Winter Is the worst time to be homeless because its so cold, You get abuse from people as well. You get spat at, beaten up, I even know people who’ve been set on fire while they are sleeping. Paul (48) The worst thing about being homeless is it’s cold – you’re cold all the time and you can never get warm. Where do I see myself in 10 years? Just hope I’m still alive.
