Ethereal (adj) “Ih-THER-ee-ul” Delicate, vapory, not of this world . . . Ethereal feelings are airy. I once felt ethereal, sick with the flu, I was dizzy and light, like a fairy. Inane (adj) “In-ANE” Inane is just foolish. Inane is so dumb. Inane is what people with fame Can become. REMEMBER THIS : Celebrity kid names are inane and insane. Definition: silly; stupid
Lurid (adj) “LOOR-id” This word can mean shocking and vivid, And it also means gruesome, revolting. When you see something lurid In life or on screen, You might find it creepy and jolting. REMEMBER THIS : Lurid things lure us. Definition: vividly shocking or sensational
Nefarious (adj) “Neh-FARE-ee-us” Heinous and evil and villainous types Are awful and cruel and nefarious. In nightmares they show up And haunt us and stalk us, And sometimes they might even bury us. REMEMBER THIS : If he’s nefarious, he’s never fair to us. Definition: wicked or criminal
Perpetuate (verb) “Per-PECH-oo-ate” It means to make long lasting. It means to keep it going. I swear that up in Maine The gods perpetuate the snowing. REMEMBER THIS : Perpetuate petting your pet. Definition: make continue indefinitely
Slander (noun) “SLAN-der” Slander is Wicked expressions of malice, Like throwing big, mean verbal stones At the walls of a palace. REMEMBER THIS : Slander is a verbal slam. Definition: the action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation
Week 005 Assignment 1st Write a sentence with each vocabulary word. 2nd Write two antonyms and two synonyms for each vocabulary word. 3rd Draw a picture that reminds you of each vocabulary word. 4th List five examples of each vocabulary word. 5th List five non-examples of each vocabulary word. 6th Write a four line poem for each word.
Word Wall Strategy Instructions: On an open wall, list the ten words across the top. The students (or classes) will use 3x5 cards to list the following under each vocabulary word: antonyms, synonyms, sentences, pictures, etc. These can be differentiated to suit the individuals.
