Steps to Final Solution • 1942, Nazi leaders met at Wannsee, Berlin • Planned quickest way to eliminate the remaining 11 million Jews • Concentration camps would become extermination camps • 6 major camps, including Auschwitz
Previous tactics • Boycotts, purges, labour camps • Nuremberg Laws • Kristallnacht • Einsatzgruppen (‘one sentence groups’) • Ghetto • Mobile gas chambers • Death camps
Process • Jews rounded up into ghettos • Transported in cattle trains to camps • Separated into two camps: 15+ healthy sent to left, old, sick and women with children sent to right
Your task • Read source 3 in your textbook on p.157 and learn what happened next to Jewish prisoners at Belzec death camp.

Your task • Watch the film clip. It contains difficult images of the suffering endured by Jewish prisoners. You may prefer simply to listen to the commentary. What does it tell us about the reaction of Germans and Allied troops to the news of what had happened in the death camps?
