The Holy Spirit Rivers of Living Water John 7:37-38 “On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, “If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” Water is a powerful picture of the Spirit’s activities
The Holy Spirit Rivers of Living Water A source of life Everything about rivers shouts LIFE – vegetation, bird life, fish and other aquatic animals Revelation 22:1-2: “Then he showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
The Holy Spirit Rivers of Living Water A source of life (cont.) John 3:3-5: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God ….Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” John 4:13-14: “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
The Holy Spirit Rivers of Living Water A source of cleansing Water is what we all wash in in order to cleanse ourselves. The Holy Spirit has an essential role in leading us to a place where we can be cleansed from our sin, both before we were born again but also day by day. John 16:8: “And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.”
The Holy Spirit Rivers of Living Water A source of healing 2 Kings 5:10: “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean” John 5:6-7: “When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is troubled, and while I am going another steps down before me.””
The Holy Spirit Rivers of Living Water A source of power Luke 24:49: “And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high.” See Acts 2:1-4 & Acts 4:29-31 for the outworking of this “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness.” Ephesians 5:18: “Be [continually] filled with the Holy Spirit”
The Holy Spirit Rivers of Living Water A source of refreshment Difficult here in UK to realise the importance of rivers as a source of refreshment and life – different in Africa when the long dry seasons are replaced by the rainy season and rivers emerge from barren places. Isaiah 55:1: “Ho, every one who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat.” All of us experience times of spiritual dryness – we need to experience the refreshing power of the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit Rivers of Living Water A source of joy Often when believers are filled with the Spirit there is a new release of joy into their lives and into their worship – a new desire to praise and worship, and a new prayer and praise language given. Romans14:17: “For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” Isaiah 12:3: "With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” See also Ephesians 5:18-20
