  2. Goal of Energy-Efficient Operation • To ensure that each significant energy-consuming device uses only as much energy as necessary to perform its intended current function.

  3. Ongoing Operations Outline of Activities: • Identify current participants in energy-efficient operation • Select a representative sample to interview • Collect information on current practices • Compile and report findings • Formulate recommendations for improving energy-efficient operation

  4. Interview Subjects • Persons Engaged in Building Management and Operations - 243 buildings - 44 million SF - $87.8 million/year energy expenditure • Building Categories State Government Large Office (managed) Corporate Office Educational: Post-Secondary Educational: K-12 Large Retail

  5. Interview Subjects • Persons Providing Services that Affect Building Operations Efficiency Recommissioning Energy Audit LEED EB LEED NC Test & Balance SEE (K-12 Schools) ReDirect (K-12 Schools/Offices)

  6. Findings • Low management recognition of value (risk) of energy-efficient operation • Approached as periodic projects, not an ongoing process • Priorities not based on understanding of risks, based on bias of provider

Findings • Procedures seldom include actual measurement of performance over time of key energy consumers • Limited availability of proactive time • Processes that do exist are not institutionalized • No ability to supervise energy-efficient operation process (No shared vision of a process to sustain energy-efficient operation)
