RA-2/MWR Cross-Calibration and Validation Team Status Report at PM8 Jérôme Benveniste RA-2/MWR C.-C.V.Team Coordinator ENVISAT Cal/Val PM8 , ESRIN, 5 December 2001
RA-2/MWR CCVT status report for ENVISAT Cal/Val PM8 (5/12/01) Table of Content • Recall of CCVT objectives • Status of completion of the actions from PM7 • Cal/Val SoW's • Logical approach and schedule • RA-2/MWR CCVT Readiness Review • Level 2 Algorithm Verification Subgroup’s report by Maria Pilar Milagro-Perez • Data circulation coordinator’s report by Luciano Rempicci • MWR Subgroup’s report by Pierre Femenias (ill today)
Objectives for RA-2/MWR CCVT • Cross-calibrated data products • WRT ERS or other altimeters (T-P, GFO, Jason) • Ensure ESA data products consistency • Validated data products • geophysical validation of the data products content and the processing models • Authorizing distribution to all users • Within 6 months of launch
Cal/Val Activities Planned • Absolute calibration of the RA-2 main geophysical parameters: • Range, Sigma0. (this is done in the RA-2 CT) • Cross-calibration against ERS (and/or TP, GFO, Jason) of the RA-2 main geophysical parameters: • Range, Significant Wave Height and Wind Speed (Sigma0). • Calibration of MWR against radiosonde measurements of water vapour and model. • Cross-calibration against ERS (and/or other radiometers) of MWR brightness temperatures and water vapour. • All RA-2/MWR products validation • Validation against models, buoys, tide gauge data, climatology data • Preparation for long-term drifts detection for range, wave height, wind speed, water vapour.
Status of completion of the actions from PM7 • Action 7.1: Next rehearsal • E-mail to PSnoeij on 30 November cf. Data Circulation coordinator presentation • Action 7.2: SoWs and Contracts • See next slide
CCVTeam Members SoWs and Contracts Contracts: 6 out of 8 established • Established • Eymard, CETP, F • Scharroo, DUT, NL • Cotton, SOS, UK • Moore, Newcastle Univ, UK • Breivik, N, (by E. Attema, AO499) • MSSL, UK (ESL) • Negotiation ongoing for: • CLS, F (ESL) • Alenia, I (ESL) • SoW and T&C: signed by 5 out of 11 PIs • All have been reminded in September and again in November • The Riegber case not finalised yet (no response).

RA-2/MWR CCVTeam Activity • RA-2/MWR CCVT Plenary meeting held on 12 September 2001 • Minutes published • Open actions: • Release “standard ERS-2 OPR and WAP data set configuration” document • Distribute WAP data in quasi-NRT mode (so-called WAP01) to CCVteam (pending management decision - UK-PAF contract) • Deliver draft RA-2/MWR Product Handbook to CCVT • RA-2/MWR CCVT Plan document version 1.0 released 12/09/01 • Data requirement finalised • incorporation of RA-2 data requests from POD group. • Coordination with F-PAC regarding level 2 algorithm verification and product validation • RA-2/MWR CCVT Internal meeting held 04/12/01 in ESRIN
RA-2/MWR CCVTeam Readiness • Few pending actions to be closed • their closure do not pose difficulty • For Cross-Calibration, the ERS-2 pointing performance is being monitored • Mispointing estimation is operational in the OPR product • “best pointing” subset of data can be selected • deltas with Topex at crossovers to validate selection
RA-2/MWR CCVTeam Readiness • The RA-2/MWR CCVTeam is ready for the Launch
