Writing/ Grammar §110.23. English Language Arts and Reading 7th Grade • (17) Writing/grammar/usage. The student applies standard grammar and usage to communicate clearly and effectively in writing. • (A) write in complete sentences, varying the types such as compound and complex sentences, and use appropriately punctuated independent and dependent clauses (7-8); • (B) use conjunctions to connect ideas meaningfully (4-8); • (D) use adjectives (comparatives and superlatives forms) and adverbs appropriately to make writing vivid or precise (4-8);
Who are my Learners? • My classroom will consist of a group of 7th grade boys and girls
Learning Objectives • Remembering: The student will be able to define adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, and compound and complex sentences • Applying: The student will be able to demonstrate the use of adjectives and adverbs through his/her own writing
Learning Objectives cont. • Analyzing: The student will be able to differentiate between complex and compound sentences. • Understanding: The student will be able to identify adverbs, adjectives, and conjunctions in written text • Creating: The student will select a topic and compose a one page story using complete sentences, as well as adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions
Learning Activities Adjectives and Adverbs • I will teach the students the definition and usage of comparative and superlative adjectives, and adverbs. This lecture will be open discussion, I will get the students involved by asking them for examples. • After the lecture I will divide the students into groups and we will play “Adjectives and Adverbs, Who Wants to be a Millionaire” • http://www.quia.com/rr/124861.html
Learning Activities • CompleteSentences • I will lecture the students on compound and complex sentences • I will review proper capitalization, and punctuation rules • I will have each student individually write one complex sentence and one compound sentence, then have him/her read them to the class.
Evaluation • For homework the students will be asked to bring in an article from a newspaper or magazine, highlighting all the adverbs and adjectives that were used.
Evaluation • The students will be asked to compose a story using adjectives, adverbs, and compound and complex sentences utilizing proper capitalization and punctuation.
