Ancient India • By the early 500s b.c.e., there were up to 16 tribes ruling over their sovereign territories. • 520-510 b.c.e. Darius the Great attempted to add India to the Persian Empire. • Alexander the Great invaded India in 326 b.c.e
Maurya Empire 321 – 232 b.c.e • Established by Chandragupta Maurya in 321 b.c.e. • 269 b.c.e. Asoka came to power and expanded the empire. • Asoka became a dedicated Buddhist following a battle where 100,000 civilians were killed.
The Death of Asoka • The death of Asoka led to a 500 year period of power struggle. • Increases in immigrants to India had a profound effect and contributed to internal strife.
Gupta Empire 320 – 415 a.c.e • Chandra Gupta became first leader of the Gupta Empire in 320 a.c.e. • The Gupta Empire expanded through intermarriage of powerful families. • The empire made improvements in Hindu culture, poetry, music and art.
