April 12, 1945: President Franklin D. Roosevelt dies of a heart attack, shortly before he was to have opened the United Nations Conference in San Francisco. May 19, 1945: Delegates from all over the world arrive in San Francisco, and immediately go to Muir Woods’ Cathedral Grove & hold a commemorative ceremony in tribute to his memory, where a dedication plaque was placed in his honor. “Chief Architect of the United Nations, and Apostle of Lasting Peace for All Mankind."
