What were some of the mistakes Jamestown settlers made? • Chose their site poorly • Low & swampy; malaria • Looked for gold instead of growing food • Adventurers, but not laborers • Who helped Jamestown survive in 1608? • 1609-1610: “starving time” • Ate dogs, cats, rats, snakes, toadstools, horsehides, and corpses
What is the “Virginia Company”? • The Virginia Company: joint stock companies chartered by James I in 1606 to establish settlements on the coast of North Amerca.
Jamestown • Despite growing tobacco, it was still not profitable in 1616, so what did they do? • Headright System: 50-acre grants of land. Each new settler received a single headright. • House of Burgesses: 1619: Delegates from various communities met. What is the significance of the House of Burgesses? • First meeting of an elected legislature
Jamestown • In 1619 a Dutch ship brought in “20 and odd Negroes.” • Marked the first step toward the enslavement of Africans in America
