  1. Comparing DNA Aim: How can we compare organisms using gel electrophoresis? Do Now: Write two observations from your results of gel electrophoresis.

Gel Electrophoresis is used to compare the similarity of DNA • DNA is cut into fragments (pieces) using Restriction Enzymes • These different sized fragments are placed into wells (holes) along the top of the gel • An electric current is sent through the gel • The fragments of DNA move down the gel • Large fragments stay at the top, small fragments go to the bottom • Compare the ‘band’ pattern to find similarities

  3. Gel Electrophoresis is used to compare the similarity of DNA • Research method of separating molecules (DNA, protein, RNA) through a gel by their physical and chemical properties.
