Objectieve • To inform about the organization through the international platform. • To explore new partners to work with us.
“Let me finish…………” “Leeet mmme Fiiiiniiish…..”
History of the NSA • Established in 2003 • Partnership started with FSD (Stuttering Association in Denmark) / DPOD (Disabled people organization Denmark) from 2003 to till date • Member of ISA in 2004 • Member of NFDN (National Federation of disabled Nepal) in 2007 • Member of Disabled peoples’ International Asia Pacific Region (DPI/AP) in 2012
Vision of the NSA • A society where persons with stuttering (PWS) live a productive life on an equal basis without discrimination and with full realization of human rights
Mission • a) Establish NSA as an effective and able leading organization of the country for promoting and protecting the rights of persons with stuttering. • b) Eliminate discriminations against people with stuttering in the society. • c) Make the state accountable for providing countrywide stuttering treatment services and fulfilling the other needs as well.
Achievements • Stuttering recognized as a speech disability by Nepal Government. • National census 2011 published data on the population of disabled persons (1.9 percent of the whole population in Nepal). According to the census, the number of persons with speech and sound disabilities amounts to 11.5 percent of the population of disabled people. These numbers seem rather small as compared to the disabled population in other countries.
Achievements…. • Stutterers can apply for speech disability ID card and facilities as can other disabled persons • Chair of the NSA is a Board Member in NFDN (National Federation of Disabled Nepal) • NSA have 15 District Branches in Nepal & 500+ members in total
Achievements…. • Participation in International Disabled Alliance, IDA workshop “ Challenges & opportunity of Monitoring the UN convention on Right of person with Disability in Geneva. • Universal Periodic Review (Human Rights Council, UN) submission on Nepal on behalf of the Nepal Stutters Association. http://lib.ohchr.org/HRBodies/UPR/Documents/Session10/NP/NGOCoalitions_JointSubmission-eng.pdf (page 17) and http://s.upr-info.org/ZDz6Mv
Member of NSA got the chance to study for medicine (MBBS) on NSA’s recommendation
Problems met by PWS • PWS hide himself/herself • PWS want immediate benefit from the organization they are affiliated. • PWS don’t want to accept himself/ herself as a stutters. • PWS want their stuttering to be cured • Speech Therapy services are limited and expensive in our country
Problems faced by NSA • Difficulty to increase the service coverage of NSA to the majority of persons who stuttering (PWS) • Difficult to establish sustainability of the organization • Difficult to work as a volunteer for long time
Future Plan: • Summer camp for children (PWS) • Approach for funding partners. • Awareness • Lobby and Advocacy.
Conclusion • NSA has important responsibility to cater the issues of stuttering people in the society • Stuttering has been recognized as speech and sound disability by Nepal Government • Since NSA is the only organization of Nepalese stuttering people, the services being delivered by NSA and its other programs should be easily accessible to PWS • Continued advocacy is strongly needed to get the issues of stuttering people addressed through the various responsible governmental agencies and make the services and facilities available in community level throughout the country • Sustainability of organization, programs, services, and human resource development are also an important issues to be addressed by NSA
Conclusion cont´ • “Friend raising is fund raising” • Other associations have the same problems • I suggest we – during this Congress – discuss establishing a network of friends doing fundraising
NSA is very grateful to ISA for providing scholarship to participate in this Congress. • NSA is very grateful to FSD (Stuttering Association in Denmark) for financial support. • Thanks to the Congress committee for technical support.
