Ku Klux Klan (KKK) • Many organized “secret” societies • started in 1866 in Pulaski, TN • Goals • drive out Union troops, carpetbaggers • regain control for Democrats • terrorized GOP & African American meetings
Enforcement Acts • passed to combat violence in the South • 1st – illegal to interfere with voting • 2nd – elections supervised by marshals • 3rd – outlawed activities of the Klan
