Purpose of the Environmental Scan • Conduct a scan of contemporary Canadian PGME to: • Identify salient issues and challenges in the academic environment, • Identify major emerging societal trends or issues that have or should have an impact on PGME, • Analyze whether and how Canadian PGME programs are engaging and responding to these issues, and • Identify innovative approaches to PGME in this country and best practices in several international contexts. Limitations and Cautions • Finite number of papers (24), with limited literature for some themes • Some potentially relevant issues not identified as significant (e.g., Resident research and scholarship) • Findings donot reflect the personal opinions of the ESC Group, but are the result of the integration of the findings from the structured research project. Societal Needs • Develop more socially-responsible educational programming that prepares physicians to meet the needs of our aging and diverse population • Plan to meet the needs of Canadians • Foster collaborative care • Develop and support effective plans for sustaining the focus on societal needs.
