Wrap-up • What was difficult about the activity? • What strategies did you use to complete the activity? • How did your partners help each other figure out what to do?
How does this apply to the Communication Standard? The Highlights: Instructional Programs should enable students to: • organize and consolidate their mathematical thinking through communication • communicate their mathematical thinking coherently and clearly to peers, teachers, and others • analyze and evaluate the mathematical thinking and strategies of others • use the language of mathematics to express mathematical ideas precisely
Communication Standard • Justify reasoning behind mathematical thinking • Formulate a question • Organize thoughts based on what they know
Developing an Ability • As students go through out their schooling it is important to nurture their ability to write mathematically • We want to help students refine their way of defining terms and communicating an idea • Seeing the perspectives of others through group work
Why this is useful • Students are learning to be clear and convincing when communicating their ideas • Students will gain better mathematical understanding while working with peers • Help students develop mathematical language to use throughout the rest of their mathematical classes “they communicate to learn mathematics, and they learn to communicate mathematically”
How do we Communicate Mathematically? • Symbols • Oral • Written Like our activity, we can see that everyone communicates differently. As teachers we need to work on teaching the students how to speak mathematically. The NCTM Standard states: “Communication can support students’ learning of new mathematical concepts as they act out a situation, draw, use objects, give verbal accounts and explanations, use diagrams, write, and use mathematical symbols.”
Some things to think about when communicating… • Technology • Accommodations for ESL students • Drawings, shapes, structures and other tools that will support the learning of mathematics and also be fun for the students to take part in
Communication throughout the grades Elementary school • students “think out loud” • Write out their thoughts Middle School Students • Test their ideas • Clarify and refine their ideas • Listening, paraphrasing, and questioning others ideas
Communication throughout the grades High School Graduates • Students should have internalized standards of dialogue and argument • Aim to clarify and justify using their knowledge gained • Clear and complete arguments
Closing Comments… • Communication is key! • Learn to use what you have • Develop mathematical language using the language students already know and use • Never, never give up!! “Communication works for those who work at it.”
