  1. High Frequency of Student TardiesExecutive Summary Janna Toche Aspiring Principal

  2. Data analysis • Student Surveys • Student Interviews • Staff Interviews • Discovery Data • Plasco Data Problem: Edison High School has a high frequency of students who are tardy to school and tardy to class. These students are missing many minutes and hours of instruction each week. Rationale:The purpose of this data collection and analysis was to gather information to further understand the reasons why students are late to class and late to school.

  3. Survey #1: FindingsN=51 Many students frequently tardy

  4. Survey #1: FindingsN=51 Students overslept Accidently or by lack of urgency to come to school? Distance and number of buses was a trend

  5. Tardy Survey #2N=47 12 Bus Riders stated they were late because they missed the bus

  6. Tardy Survey #2N=47 Majority of students from other, Northeast Minneapolis, and North Minneapolis Students who are late are bus riders and walkers

  7. Tardy Survey #2N=47 Leading reasons Overslept accidently Sick Family Obligations Missed the Bus

  8. Plasco Data 4 days of data Total of 426 tardy passes 11th and 12th grade-large amount of tardies

  9. Plasco Data Majority of passes during 1st Hour

  11. Plasco Data 11/5 – 11/8Students with 3 or more tardies from 11/5 – 11/8 N=32 Students

  12. Discovery Data11/5 – 11/8 Most tardies during 1st hour

  13. Majority of students who are late to school are bus riders • Many students are late to school due to the number of buses they take to school, and missing a bus. These students are coming from Northeast, North, Brooklyn Center, and South Minneapolis. • 12 bus riders stated they were late to school because they missed the bus • Many students stated that they would like the school times to be later • Students are given passes without being asked for a reason • There is no visible clock when students enter the building Major Findings Late to school

  14. The most tardies are during 1stperiod • Students are stopping to socialize in the halls, then respond at the second bell • Students are permitted into class within a minute of the bell without a pass • Students are given passes without being asked for a reason • There are little to no consequences for students who are tardy to class • Students are able to assimilate into class when they are late. • Teachers are not standing in their doorways to greet students • Teachers with clear consequences for tardies, have less students tardy to their classes • Teachers with a “bell ringer” and defined time to complete it, have less tardies Major Findings Late to class

  15. Are teachers checking the time on passes? • What is the time difference from when the student receives a pass to the time they get to class? • What is the current policy in each class for students who are tardy? What are the consequences? • What would create a sense of urgency and motivate students to come to school and class on time? • Are all Plasco equipment synching? Next Steps…More information needed… Limitation: There is a discrepancy between the data in Plasco and in Discovery. Are Plasco scanners synching to the same system?
