  9. Programme History • PAS [Programme for Academic Success] ran SIX weeks programme starting Monday after Pittsburgh High Schools’ graduation. • Library involvement ? One time brief introduction session.

  10. Programme History • 2011 ELEVEN students enrolled.

Smart Start is Born! • TWO weeks programme before term begins. • 3 credits 2012 & 2013, 2 credits 2014. • Librarians meet cohorts daily, 75 mins. • What do you need, where is it, credibility, don’t plagiarise. Activities/exercises/assessment. • Throw in “how to find your free textbooks” [EZBorrow or Reserve] as an appreciated bonus.

  13. Smart Start Library Benefits • Students get info lit skills boost. • Keep in touch – emails, pizza parties. • Hire them as our work studies. • Help with University retention.

  14. Assessment/Follow Up • Will conduct “how did the Library help you” survey in Spring 2015 using 2012, 2013, 2014 cohorts. • Students say name “Smart Start” makes them feel “stupid” and “labelled”. Will look at changing name.

  24. OUT OF THE SHADOWS • Workshop promoted PA Forward Health Literacy • Focus on Consumer Mental Health Resources • Partners include Academic Libraries, Public Libraries, Human Service Agencies and NNLM/MAR • .

  25. Partnering for PA Forward Health Literacy • Look to your local human service agencies for good partnerships • Consider working with NNLM/MAR. They have funding, hand-outs, and resources to help you. • Consider starting small and moving on to bigger efforts. Even small efforts are a big step!
