  3. The National Basic Research Program of China /973 Program • Ocean-Atmosphere Interaction over the Joining Area of Asia and Indian-Pacific Ocean (AIPO) and Its Impact on the Short-Term Climate Variation in China Period: 2006.09 - 2011.09 • Low Frequency Variability of Subtropical North Pacific Ocean Circulation and Its Impacts on the Dynamic Environment of the Marginal Seas (NPOIMS) Period: 2007.09 - 2012.09

  4. AIPO: KEY SCIENTIFIC ISSUES The theme of the program is to identify the characteristics, patterns, and causes of air-sea interactions over the AIPO joining area and the intrinsic mechanisms of their impacts on the short-term climate anomalies over China.

  5. AIPO: Specified Objectives • Reveal the characteristics in seasonal to inter-annual time scale of the air-sea interaction in the AIPO joining area, and propose a theoretical framework about the impacts of these processes on the short-term climate variation in this area; • Develop a new-generation OGCM and its coupled climate model, and propose theories and methods for improving the prediction of the East Asian climate variation on seasonal to interannual scales; • Construct a fine spacial resolution ocean data assimilation system for the AIPO joining area, achieve significant advances in the predictability of ENSO and East Asian monsoon, and also provide a set of high-quality ocean re-analysis data in this area.

  6. NPOIMS: Objectives To understand Mechanisms and improve the Prediction of low- frequency variability of dynamic environmentsof the marginal seas and the adjacent deep ocean.

  7. NPOIMS:Specified Objectives (1) reveal the processes and mechanisms of energy and mass exchange between the subtropical North Pacific and the marginal seas; (2) establish both conceptual and numerical models of this dynamic exchange system, and assess the predictability of low frequency variability of the marginal seas and the adjacent deep ocean; (3) develop theories of interaction between deep ocean and marginal seas.

  8. WPSH AIPO: Western Pacific gyre interaction between tropics and subtropics and its relationship with the western Pacific anticyclone EA-WP Heat Transport

  9. 3.Mechanisms of the Kuroshio variations over the East China Sea and its impacts on the shelf dynamic environment 1. Dynamics and mechanisms of interior ocean variability and its influences on the western boundary current 2. Mechanisms of variations of the current system at the Kuroshio origin and impacts on the water and energy exchange through Luzon Strait NPOIMS: Some Key Scientific Issues

  10. Plan for Field Experiment Mooring Array and Cross Section Observation Cross section stations Moorings by 973 projects Moorings by 863 project From 2008 Submersible mooring system and cross-section observations in the sea east of Luzon: Eight long-term (2-3 years) submersible moorings and several (3-4) cruise observational cross-sections near 18N and in the East China Sea. Data: upper ocean temperature-salinity, flow velocity and air-sea interface flux, and other key parameters.

  11. West Pacific Observation from AIPO and NPOIMS Target: Understanding Air-sea interaction in Western Pacific and Western North Pacific monsoon (1) Period: 2008-2009 (2) Observation regions: Luzon Strait, East and West of the Luzon Island (18N), East China Sea, and Western Pacific; (3) Observation items/Data: Mooring at the eight stations, upper ocean temperature-salinity, flow velocity, air-sea interface flux and RV cruises.
