Unit 7: Consumer Skills Section 3: Buying a Car
I CAN • Apply each of the following to the purchase of a car: • Acceptance • Cash Value • Counteroffer • Face Value • Offer • Property Taxes • Sticker Price • Title • VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
Terms you need to know • find out the sticker price: this is the price the person or dealership is asking for the car (you should verify this price with the cash value- price listed in the Kelley Blue Book/market value) • Face value is usually the same as cash value. On its face, how much is this car truly worth? • Be smart! Before you offer for the car, check its VIN online to be sure its not a lemon, or hasn’t been in many accidents. • make and offer: the amount you would like to pay • the salesperson will likely offer a counteroffer (lower than the sticker price, but higher than your offer) • Once the salesperson and customer have accepted (agreed on) a fair price, you are a car owner!
You own a car! Now what? • The cost of the car is not the only thing you will pay. You will also pay YOUR CITY property taxes on the car. There are lots of online calculators for this. You will pay it EVERY YEAR! • You will need proof you paid your taxes, then you can go to the DMV to get your car titled. You cannot drive or sell a car, if it is not titled. This is another expense!
CAN I • Apply each of the following to the purchase of a car: • Acceptance • Cash Value • Counteroffer • Face Value • Offer • Property Taxes • Sticker Price • Title • VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) I can prove this by creating a skit, video, or song (by myself or with 1-2 friends) effectively explaining the process of buying a car using all of the vocabulary from this section.
