Base Words • Base words do NOT have any word parts added to it. • Examples of base words: stomping, cleared, wraps
Inflected Endings • The endings –s, -es, -ed, and –ing can be added to base verbs. • The –s or –es ending means that the action happens in the present. • The –ing ending means that the action happens in the present. • The –ed ending means that the action happened in the past. ** Remember when a base verb ends in an e, drop the final e before adding –ed or –ing (e.g. dare= dared, daring)!!
Examples of Inflected Word Endings • Walk- walks, walked, walking • Hop- hops, hopped, hopping • Elaborate- elaborates, elaborated, elaborating • Refill- refills, refilled, refilling
Using Words with Inflected Endings • I was walking home after school in the snowy mix. [based work walk] • My puppy, Oscar, likes to chew on bones. [based word like] • My teacher elaborated on what it means to treat others the way you want to be treated. [based word elaborate] • I was hoping that it would be sunny and warm this week. [base word hope] • I refilled my water bottle after gym class. [base word refill]
