  1. ISTE Standard 3 Research and Information Fluency By Cindy Burns and Charlotte Wheeless

  2. Unit Plan • Plugging into the Sun • Essential Question: What causes scientists to consider new alternatives to solve problems? • In this unit, students will design a device that will transfer the sun’s energy for a useful purpose.

  3. A) Plan Strategies to Guide Inquiry • Brainstorm and reflect in Session I • Teacher will ask “What would happen if…” questions to guide student’s into thinking critically • Students will be given a project checklist at the beginning of the unit to help students plan and track their progress

  4. B) Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. • Students research the dilemma of using fossil fuels and how solar energy might solve the problem. • Students will create spreadsheets and graphs • Classroom discourse will be used throughout the unit to allow students to analyze and evaluate the major concepts of the unit

  5. C) Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks. • Students will research and evaluate solar cooker designs • Students will evaluate how solar energy could be used as an alternative to fossil fuels • Upon completion of the unit, students will select a digital tool to create their multi-media presentation

  6. D) Process data and report results • After building and successfully testing their solar cookers, students display their learning in multimedia presentations or newsletters. • In the process of designing, building, and testing their solar cookers, students will gather and process data and make necessary changes in their cookers as a result of that.
