SpO2(oxygen saturation) is the fraction of oxygen saturated haemoglobin relative to total haemoglobin. It is important to estimate the fitness level of an individual and is generally expressed in percentage. SpO2(oxygen saturation) is dependent upon various factors such as oxygen availability, gas exchange in the lungs, concentration of haemoglobin in the red blood cells and the affinity of haemoglobin for oxygen. The normal oxygen level of an healthy individual lies between 95-100%. Having normal saturation level indicates that the body is getting sufficient oxygen and the internal organs are performing at their best. Having very low blood oxygen level for a short time does not have serious problem. But if it persists, it puts stress on heart and brain and cause organ damage.
SpO2(Oxygen Saturation) is generally measured non-invasively from the PPG signal obtained from the fingertip pulse oximeter. People with chronic conditions like asthma, heart disease and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) have relatively low blood oxygen levels. They need to monitor their oxygen levels to determine if their treatments are working. Low blood oxygen levels cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, headache, restlessness, dizziness, rapid breathing, chest pain, confusion, high blood pressure, lack of coordination, visual disorders, sense of euphoria and rapid heartbeat.
