Current Events (Set #5) • 1. “Controversial Taiji Cove Annual Dolphin Hunt Begins Despite Protests by Activists and Conservationists.” • Japan defends hunt as ancient “fishing” practice deeply rooted in its culture; this year’s quota is 2,000. Hunting boats create a wall of sound that deafens dolphin pods and drives them into shallow water killing cove

Current Event #2 2. “Heroes Project: Birthplace of the Ku Klux Klan Looks to Reclaim its Past by Changing its Identity and Perception.” Pulaski, TN residents shift focus from KKK to local heroes & landmarks on the Trail of Tears & Underground Railroad. The KKK began with a meeting of Confederate soldiers in Tennessee after the Civil War

Current Events #3 3. “Center for Disease Control (CDC) Reports First Ebola Case in U.S., but Vows it will Stop Here.” Dallas hospital confirms case of critically ill patient who was quarantined after arriving from Liberia. Virus is spread by contact with bodily fluids It’s an epidemic, not a pandemic….yet Projected: 1.2 million deaths in 6 months Total Case Count: 6574 Total Deaths: 3091 Patient had no symptoms when leaving Liberia or entering the United States; no details on how virus was contracted

  5. Current Events #4 4. “Final Pillar of Islam: 2 Million Muslims Begin Annual Hajj Pilgrimage to Mecca. (like Abraham & Muhammad).” Pilgrims cross the Arabian desert, stone the Devil, pray at Mount Arafat, circle the Kabah, & feast of sacrifice. Hajj is a mandatory religious duty for Muslims which must be carried out once in a lifetime unless there is physical or financial hardship

  6. Current Event #5 5. “Pluto Reinstated? Discovered in 1930, Harvard Scientist Makes Case to IAU to Drop Dwarf Planet Status (2006) .” Astronomical Union says it does orbit the sun and is nearly round, but is not clear of objects of similar size & orbit. International Astronomical Union Pluto is a celestial snowball with a surface of methane ice 3.6 billion miles from the sun/ Astronomer says planets are a culturally defined word that can change over time.
