The IDeA • Created 1999 • Counterpoint to Audit Commission’s role • For and of local government - part of the family • Supporting improvement, innovation and delivery of excellent public services
Peer Review – the history • Key driver of our improvement strategy for the sector • Over 500 completed • Pioneered use of peers for ‘sector led improvement’ • ‘Critical friend’ approach – not an inspection • Types: Corporate, Healthy Communities, Diversity, Housing, Planning, FRS operational etc. • ‘Diagnostic’ approach using benchmark of an ideal authority
IDeA strategic housing programme • IDeA Strategic Housing programme (CLG funded by £3.3 million) 2007 to early 2009 • Successful programme that engaged all SW local authorities and involved most of them in programme delivery • Included: development economics seminars, preparation and support for Audit Commission inspections, county-wide seminars, peer reviews, Gypsy and Traveller programme etc. • Programme co-ordination with Planning Advisory Service
