    2. What is OCS? A state developed special education program. A functional academic curriculum with a focus on transition to independent living after high school. Hands on vocational and job-readiness training for students with disabilities.

    3. The OCS is NOT: An appropriate curriculum for all students who cannot obtain a high school diploma through another course of study. A program designed to remove students with disabilities from the accountability standards. A “classroom-textbook” driven course of study. A college-prep curriculum.

    4. Goals of OCS Promote independence and self-determination for students with moderate to significant disabilities. Reduce the drop-out rate for these students. Support transition from school to adult life. Increase student employability upon graduation.

    5. OCS Outcomes A regular state sanctioned high school diploma for the individual student. Higher accountability for teachers and school districts. A better prepared local workforce. Improved quality of life for OCS graduates.

    6. Who should consider OCS? Students with an IEP. Students whose educational needs cannot be met in the Standard Course of Study. Students with a post-school goal of employment. Students who need functional academic skills and hands-on vocational training.

    7. The Decision Process The IEP team reviews the student’s educational records and determines if the student is eligible to participate in the OCS. The IEP team makes a recommendation to parent and student. The IEP team – along with the parent and student - makes the decision.

    8. What if the student and parent refuse to participate in OCS?

    9. OCS Students in CTE classes A CTE Teacher should be a member of the OCS student’s IEP team. The IEP team should review the Course Blueprints and determine appropriate content modifications for each student. The Special Ed Teacher and the CTE teacher should each keep a copy of the modified blueprint. The OCS student may take the same CTE course more than once for credit.

    10. OCS Students in CTE classes Will have substantial course modification. May need support in the day-to-day classroom activities. Will have modified assessment. Do not take standard CTE EOC. Scores are not reported to the state.
