Use of the Atomic Bomb- August 1945 • The United States drop two atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This marks the don of Nuclear Age.
Iron Curtain- March 5,1946 • Stalin predicted ultimate triumph of communism over capitalism. • Winston Churchill responds with his famous “iron curtain speech”
Berlin Air- June,1948- May 19,1949 • Soviets blocked allied access to West Berlin, which caused severe shortages of food and supplies. British and American aircrafts made over 200,000 flights to deliver food, fuel, and other supplies.
Creation of NATO- April, 1949 • United States and Western Europe promise common defense. Over 50 years both sides maintain large military forces.
Korean War- June 25,1950-July 27,1953 • Nicknamed the forgotten war because it was meaning lest war for the Americans. This was the first war that had integrated units. Enormous frustration in the US with 54,000 dead and 103,000 wounded for limited results.
Vietnam War-November1,1955- April 30,1975 • At first the US was not involved in conflict we only sent advisors . In the beginning of 1968 there was a major offensive called “Tet Offensive”. It was a major victory Viet cong Psychologically. In 1973 an Formal peace agreement was signed. In 1975 North Vietnam completed its conquest of South Vietnam
Election of JFK-1960 • This election was closest election since 1916. John Kennedy was running against Richard Nixon.
Cuban Missile Crisis • Kennedy had four options negotiate with Khrushchev, Invade Cuba, Blockade Cuba, or Bomb the missile sites. Kennedy decide to go authorize a Naval Quarantine.
Kennedy Assassination • JFK was killed November 22,1963 in Dallas, Texas. He was shot in upper back and killed with a shot to the head
Richard Nixon • Nixon became president in 1969. Nixon was the first president to visit China and Soviet Union.He was the only president to resign from office.
Ronald Reagan • Reagan is the only president was an former actor. Reagan believed in increase of US military and economic funds.
Berlin Wall • November 9, 1989 the Berlin Wall comes down.
Collapse of the Soviet Union • Gorbachev resigned 12/25/1991. Soviet Union was replaced with commonwealth of independent states.
